Casey III, Esq. · Published October 25, 2026

Alcohol withdrawal can turn dangerous quickly, and seizures are one of the most serious risks. Many families hope the person will simply ride it out at home. For some people, that is not a safe plan. This guide explains the warning signs, when to get emergency care, and how Florida’s Marchman Act may apply if a loved one refuses help. Robinson Casey limits practice to Marchman Act petitions and guardianship matters.

Why Alcohol Withdrawal Can Become Dangerous Quickly

Withdrawal can become dangerous when a heavy drinker stops suddenly or cuts back sharply. The body has adjusted to alcohol over time. When alcohol drops away, the nervous system can react in harmful ways.

How dangerous it becomes depends on several things. It depends on how much the person drinks, how long they have drunk heavily, and their overall health. A person with other medical problems may face more risk than someone who is otherwise healthy.

Families often underestimate the change. Early symptoms can look like a bad day or a stomach bug. Shaking, sweating, anxiety, and poor sleep can grow worse over hours, not days. Watch the person closely, and do not assume the worst is over because they seem calm for a moment.

If you are watching someone you love shake, sweat, or stop making sense after stopping drinking, you do not have to work out the next step alone. Alcoholic withdrawal seizures can’t wait treatment Florida families delay while they hope symptoms will fade. A seizure can happen without warning. It can strike a person who seems to be settling down.

Seizures are a reason clinicians manage withdrawal in a monitored setting. Doctors can watch vital signs and respond quickly if something changes. A person at home has no such watch.

See Fla. Stat. § 397.679 for the text. If a seizure has happened or is happening, get emergency medical care first. Legal steps can wait until the person is safe.

Delirium Tremens: Warning Signs That Cannot Wait

Delirium tremens is a severe form of alcohol withdrawal. It causes confusion, agitation, and hallucinations, and it can affect the heart and other body systems. It is a medical emergency, and it cannot be managed safely at home.

A family member may notice several signs. Look for disorientation, such as not knowing the date or place. Watch for severe shaking, heavy sweating, fever, and a racing heartbeat. Hallucinations, such as seeing or hearing things that are not there, are a major warning sign. So is an inability to sleep or to stay oriented.

If these signs appear, call 911 or take the person to the nearest emergency room right away. Do not wait to see whether they improve. Do not try to sedate them with leftover medicine or alcohol. Tell responders how much and how long the person has been drinking, and report any past seizures.

Why Waiting Out Withdrawal Is Not Safe for Everyone

Waiting out withdrawal at home is not a safe plan for everyone. It carries the most risk for someone who drinks heavily every day or who has had withdrawal before.

Mild symptoms can be uncomfortable but may still be manageable under a doctor’s watch. The situation has escalated when the person becomes confused, hallucinates, has a seizure, or cannot stay awake or oriented. Any of those signs call for emergency care.

Florida law also recognizes that withdrawal itself can be a medical issue. A service provider may hold a person for more than 72 hours of observation in some cases. One reason is that the person shows signs of withdrawal or needs detoxification or treatment for a medical condition; the hold can then last until the issue is resolved, but no later than the scheduled hearing date unless the court approves an extension. See Fla. Stat. § 397.6818. The law treats withdrawal as a reason to continue care, not a reason to send someone home.

Tell the doctor about any past withdrawal, past seizures, or other medical conditions. That history shapes the care plan.

Medically Supervised Withdrawal: What It Involves

Medically supervised withdrawal means a clinical team watches the person and manages their care. The team monitors vital signs, supports fluids and nutrition, and checks for complications. Staff can respond quickly if symptoms change.

Clinicians may also use medications to ease withdrawal. Which medication is used, and how, is a decision a physician makes based on the patient’s medical history. Families should not choose drugs or doses on their own. Do not give alcohol, sedatives, or leftover prescriptions to “take the edge off.”

If the person is already under a doctor’s care, call that doctor’s office for guidance. If the person needs emergency care, call 911 first. Clinical decisions belong to the medical team that examines the patient.

When the Person Refuses Help: How Florida’s Marchman Act Can Apply

Florida’s Marchman Act is a court process for an adult whose substance use is causing serious harm and who will not get help voluntarily. A family member can ask a judge to order an assessment and possible treatment.

Several people may file. For an adult, the list includes the spouse or legal guardian, any relative, a service provider, or an adult who has direct personal knowledge of the impairment and of the person’s prior course of assessment and treatment.
