How Did You Get Into The Field Of Mental Health And Addiction Treatment?
I entered the field because of personal experiences with mental health and addiction issues. From a young age, I struggled with mental health challenges and began experimenting with substances at 12. My father was a therapist, which piqued my interest in the field. Despite personal struggles, including legal issues related to substance use, I pursued a career in therapy, influenced by seeing firsthand how therapy could be transformative.
What Led You To Create Transcend Wellness, And What Is Its Philosophy?
Transcend Wellness is a men’s only intensive outpatient program focused on providing personalized treatment. Our philosophy is based on addressing the inadequacies in the treatment world, particularly the volume-driven approach of many centers. We limit our program to 12 clients, ensuring a three-to-one client-to-therapist ratio. This allows us to provide high-quality, individualized care, focusing on gender-specific treatment for men in a supportive environment.
What Are Some Notable Trends You’re Observing In Addiction Treatment?
A significant trend we’re seeing is the influx of newly retired men seeking treatment. Many face depression and identity loss after leaving successful careers. Additionally, in our area, there’s a rise in chemsex, where drugs like methamphetamines are used in conjunction with sexual activities. This trend cuts across economic backgrounds and has led to increased substance use among individuals who previously never engaged with such drugs.
How Does The Marchment Act Relate To Treatment And Recovery?
The Marchment Act is a tool for involuntary treatment, which can be critical when individuals are unable to recognize their need for help due to the nature of addiction. While willingness is crucial for recovery, the act can provide a necessary intervention when someone is in denial about their condition. It offers a structured opportunity for individuals to receive treatment and potentially realize the benefits of recovery.
What Are Your Thoughts On The Effectiveness Of Involuntary Treatment?
Involuntary treatment can be effective, especially when individuals are in the depths of addiction and unable to make rational decisions. While willingness is important, initial resistance doesn’t preclude eventual acceptance and recovery. Structured interventions, like those provided under the Marchment Act, can offer individuals the time and space needed to begin recognizing their issues and pursuing recovery.
